HOW TO MEASURE FOOT LENGTH
Foot length is the basis for determining your shoe size. Since shoe sizes do not adhere to a standard, labels like 37, 39⅓, or 7.5 can only serve as rough guidelines. It‘s better to compare the measured foot length, along with the necessary allowance, to the inside length of the shoe.
1. Measuring foot length to determine shoe size
Here’s how you can measure your feet using the wall-line method.
2. Place a sheet of paper
Align a sheet of paper against a vertical wall without baseboards and secure it with adhesive tape.
3. Position your foot
Step onto the sheet with both feet and position yourself so that your heels gently touch the wall. The sheet shouldn’t crinkle.
4. Mark the foot length
Mark the longest point of both feet with a short line. This might not necessarily be at the big toe. Ideally, a second person should make the markings, as bending over can skew the measurement.
5. Measure
Now measure the distances from both markings to the edge of the heel to determine your foot length. Use the measurement of the longer foot.
6. Add the necessary
To determine the required inside length of the shoe, add 1 – 1.5 cm as a standard allowance to the foot length. Depending on the type of shoe, the allowance for toe room might be slightly more or less.
